Adobe ImageStyler

Current Version: 1.0 | Oldest Version: 1.0

Adobe ImageStyler is a software program that helps non-professionals as well as professionals easily create unique Web graphics such as banners, headlines, navigation bars, backgrounds, and buttons. It's an application that handles such tasks involved in Web creation as: designing visual effects; optimizing graphics for quicker loading in a browser; producing JavaScript rollover effects; and even batch-updating Web pages. The program combines the illustration tools of Adobe Illustrator with the photographic rendering and manipulation facilities of Adobe Photoshop, and has additional new layering and editing features of its own. You can create objects in ImageStyler or use bitmap or vector files produced by both Illustrator and Photoshop, and you don't lose the scalability of vector graphics. This feature gives you design flexibility.

ImageStyler contains 100 pre-designed styles, dozens of shapes (ranging from umbrellas and trees to typographical dingbats), and Web page templates that can be used to quickly create sophisticated and professional Web pages, with JavaScript rollovers, by even the most design-impaired individual with no HTML or JavaScript code background. The image to the left is a template from ImageStyler. The image to the right was created using the ImageStyler template and customizing it.
This program is intuitive enough for someone just starting out in Web design; yet it has the power and features that would appeal to intermediate and advanced users. Creating Web graphics can be time-consuming and tedious. ImageStyler cuts your production time and you don't need extensive design experience or HTML expertise. Novices will be amazed at how easy and quick it is to create professional designs. Just within the tutorial in the first chapter of the User Guide, you learn to create a sophisticated Web page with a JavaScript rollover effect.

Adobe Shockwave

Current Version: 9.0.0.434 | Oldest Version: 10.1.0.11

Adobe Shockwave (formerly Macromedia Shockwave) was Macromedia's first and most successful multimedia player prior to the introduction of Adobe Flash, called Macromedia Flash at that time. In an attempt to raise its brand profile all Macromedia players prepended Shockwave to their names in the late 1990s. Although this campaign was very successful and helped establish Shockwave Flash as a dominant multimedia plugin, Shockwave and Flash became more difficult to maintain as two separate products. In 2005, Macromedia marketed three distinct browser player plugins under the brand names Macromedia Authorware, Macromedia Shockwave and Macromedia Flash.

Although Shockwave was designed for making a wide variety of online movies and animations, its actual use has become concentrated in the area of game development. Other features not replicated by Flash include a much faster rendering engine, including hardware-accelerated 3D, blend modes for layered display of graphic assets and support for various network protocols, including Internet Relay Chat. Furthermore Shockwave's functionality can be extended with so-called "Xtras". Unlike Flash, the Shockwave browser plugin is not available for Linux (or Solaris) despite vocal lobbying efforts by the Linux community[1].

According to Adobe, Macromedia Shockwave Player is available on 50.6% of Internet-enabled PCs (Shockwave Player Census). Macromedia Shockwave Player uses .DCR files created using the authoring tool Macromedia Director. Its MIME type is application/x-director.

Macromedia Flash

Current Version: MX 2004 | Oldest Version: 1.0

Macromedia Flash, or simply Flash. The Flash Player, developed and distributed by Adobe Systems (who bought Macromedia), is a client application available in most dominant web browsers. It features support for vector and raster graphics, a scripting language called ActionScript and bidirectional streaming of audio and video.

Strictly speaking, Macromedia Flash is the integrated development environment (IDE) and Flash Player is the virtual machine used to run the Flash files, but in colloquial language these have become mixed: "Flash" can mean either the authoring environment, the player, or the application files.

Since its introduction in 1996, Flash technology has become a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to web pages; several software products, systems, and devices are able to create or display Flash. Flash is commonly used to create animations and advertisements; to design web-page elements; to add video to web sites; and, more recently, to develop Rich Internet Applications.

The Flash files, traditionally called "flash movies", usually have a .swf file extension and may appear as an element of a web page or to be "played" in the standalone Flash Player.

The versions provided are free to try for 30 days.

Unfortunately, these versions have been removed for the time being.
