Most of us have, at one time or another, deleted some files convinced that we don’t need them anymore, or have already backed them up to another location, only to realise later that we hadn’t finished with them and hadn’t backed them up either.
Luckily, there’s the Recycle Bin, to which most deleted files which are moved until such time as you actually empty the bin, or from where you can recover the file you accidentally deleted. Unless, of course, the files you deleted were on a USB drive or camera memory card, for instance.
In such a situation, all is not lost, and you can make use of a data recovery program, such as the one we’ll look at here, Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional.
The program interface has been well thought out; the tool headings of Disk Diagnostics, Data Recovery, File Repair, Email Repair, Software Updates and Crisis Centre are listed down the left with individual tools within each category accessible and clearly detailed in the right hand pane.
Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional is a suite of programs all of which have been designed to enable you, not only to recover lost or deleted data and repair damaged files, but also to test your drive hardware, check drive information, and monitor your drives for potential issues.
Disk Diagnostics, for example, consists of Drive Tests, designed to detect potential hardware problems, Smart Tests, to monitor drives for issues and several other elements including creation of a bootable drive diagnostic disk.
Data Recovery is the core of the program, and there are several elements to this aspect, consisting of Advanced Recovery, within which you can set specific parameters for file recovery; Deleted Recovery, whereby you can quickly scan a drive for recently deleted files; Format Recovery will attempt to recover files from a formatted drive; Raw Recovery, which, in cases where files seem irrecoverable as a result of a severely corrupted drive, can scan for and attempt to recover raw file data.
The File Repair and Email Repair elements are of particular interest to users of Microsoft Office, Outlook, Outlook Express or Zip Files, whereby files which are damaged or corrupted and can no longer be opened, can be repaired.
To illustrate just how good the file recovery is, a colleague came to me only yesterday having deleted 20 important photographs from his camera (1 Gb mem card), thinking he’d already copied them to his hard drive, when he hadn’t. Initially, we tried a different, free, recovery program (I won’t mention which one), and we both waited impatiently for at least a couple of hours, watching the slowly moving progress bar creep all the way to 100%, before 0 files were found.
Then we tried Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional, which fairly flew through the search process in about 15 minutes and, low and behold, all the missing photographs were found, recovered and saved.
Generally, I’m not one for promoting the virtues of “professional” software; however, in this instance, I’ll make an exception. Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional does exactly what it says on the tin, and it does it easily, quickly and efficiently.
