Why old software versions matter

In a recent post on the oldversion.com blog attention was drawn to a comment left on the site’s Facebook page by a user who said, “I am using your oldversion.com resource to restore some really low resource computers to give to people who have no money to buy a computer for themselves or their children.”

What a fantastic use of the oldversion.com service!

If ever there was an argument for maintaining freely available archives of old versions of software, then this has to be one of the better ones. Why should access to computers and the Internet be the sole preserve of those privileged enough to afford it?

Old versions make us a little more equal

Old user frustrated with newer versions

I was sifting through our Facebook page saw something that made me smile:

“I am using your oldversion.com resource to restore some really low resource computers to give to people who have no money to buy a computer for themselves or their children.”

Michael further went on to comment:

The computers I am working on are Intel mmx 200 and amd 233 processor based. The business school my oldest son works at refitted all their classrooms with new units when alex an investor bought the school and these units had to be gotten rid of. I had room in my garage and the hauled them over here and I have been working on them on and off for the past two years. They all had win 98 installed so I had to find old software to work with win 98 and have came up with quite a lot. Firefox 3.6.25 works pretty good and is still supported by Mozilla.

The history of Winamp!

No history of digital audio is complete without mentioning Winamp. Nullsoft’s iconic media player was by far the most popular during the so called “mp3 revolution” at the turn of the century, and achieved somewhat of a cult status amongst a whole generation of music-loving computer geeks. This was largely due to its ease of use, its customization ability and its strong plug-in architecture, which set trends still seen in today’s applications.

However, Winamp has seen its fair share of controversies. Versions that were supposed to have been updates often offered reduced functionality or included ad-ware, and users often chose to remain with technically outdated versions. Perhaps uniquely in application development history, Continue reading →

Opera v.11.01 / Mozilla Firefox 3.6 / Google Chrome 9.0 Comparison

The ubiquitous Microsoft Internet Explorer seems to have been around, in its various incarnations, forever and, perhaps because it comes with Microsoft Windows, it’s held the number one slot for web browsers for a while too. However, recent years have seen the rise of a whole gaggle of competitors to IE’s crown, all of which claim to be better than the Microsoft offering, and each other.

Firstly, it needs to be said that there is, and always has been, a great deal of product loyalty when it comes to software. Much akin to the eternal arguments about Pcs Vs. Macs, Windows Vs. Linux etc, these are arguments which you just can’t win, as some people who have been using one or the other for years, aren’t interested in the virtues of anything else; however, it’s worth knowing that, whilst IE has been around forever, and is still the most commonly used web browser, the competition, three of the most popular of which we will look at here, is, in many ways, much better. Going back in time: Microsoft Windows Adverts

I have to admit I am a bit of a sucker when it comes to that window with 4 colors, ya see no matter how many blue screens i have encountered, my allegiance stayed with Bill Gates, and not the penguin or the apple. Why? i hear you ask, well most of the things i love have come from childhood, and stuck with me until now. We will have to go back in time and explore those glorious adverts Microsoft unleashed to the world:

First up is the windows 95 color logo ad, when i was a kid, this literally blew me away…

Next up is a windows 98 commercial with music that rocked! why didn’t they make an official microsoft album?

So there you have it, a true love for the Microsoft golden oldies, now all we need is for Microsoft to release its fast food chain or maybe team up with Mcdonalds?…. a Mcsoft cheesburger please :)
